If you’ve tried sculpting your body through diet and exercise but still haven’t attained the desired results, liposuction may be the answer. As one of the most common cosmetic procedures, liposuction can help reshape certain areas of the body for a more balanced physique and improved self-image. Learn more about it and how Apex Rhinology & Cosmetic Surgery can help you live your best life.

Liposuction Explained

Liposuction or lipoplasty is a procedure that removes excess fat from the buttocks, belly, back, neck, arms, legs, waist, chest, or other areas using a suction device and a cannula or thin tube. Though not a replacement for weight loss through healthy eating and exercise, lipoplasty can help contour areas that aren’t adequately responding to those efforts.

Why Choose Liposuction

Not all fat in the body is the same. People are genetically predetermined to hold on to some areas of fat regardless of the amount of dieting and exercise. Those areas are usually referred to as “stubborn” and can be the source of much anguish and frustration. Addressing those areas can lead to physical, psychological, and cosmetic improvement. Our preoperative assessment with 3D computer analysis (VECTRA® H2) will help you identify specific areas to address and the best ways to do so.

Types of Results to Expect

Most people are thrilled with their new bodies. They experience increased confidence; clothes fit better; and they exude a healthier, happier vibe. The excess fat can be reinjected for a better, more sensual figure — most women, for example, ask for fat injection into the buttocks.

Specific Areas That Can Be Targeted

All areas that contain an inch or more of fat can be targeted, changed, and improved by liposuction.  Nonsurgical options such as cryolipolysis (freezing fat), nonablative laser (melting fat), or mesotherapy (breaking fat down) are also available at Apex Rhinology & Cosmetic Surgery. Our experts can work with you to determine which method of excess fat reduction is best for reaching your better-body goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are liposuction results immediate?

Liposuction offers immediate fat removal, however there is expected postoperative swelling and the need for tissue contraction and skin tightening. Usually initial results are obvious in 1–2 weeks. The final result is judged after 1–2 months.

Are liposuction results permanent?

The fat cells are permanently removed. If the patient continues to gain weight, however, the residual fat cells can hypertrophy. It’s physically impossible and often harmful to attempt to remove each and every fat cell; some fat is needed below the skin to maintain a normal contour and to avoid skin irregularities.

Can liposuction remove visceral fat?

Liposuction cannot and should not be used to remove anything other than subcutaneous fat.  Visceral fat — deep belly fat surrounding the intestine — cannot be accessed by liposuction cannula.

Can liposuction help diabetes?

Diabetes is a complex medical problem — a combination of hereditary factors and diet. Though with massive fat removal, slight improvement in blood sugar may be achieved, this is dangerous and not recommended. Diabetes should be treated only by qualified physicians. Liposuction surgery does not have a role in management of this medical condition.

Can liposuction get rid of cellulite?

Liposuction is not designed to address cellulite, which involves superficial depression and skin irregularities of the thigh and buttocks area. Cellulite can be addressed by a different technique at the time of liposuction.

When is liposuction performed for medical reasons?

On rare occasions, liposuction may be performed to remove benign fatty tumors such as lipomas. Liposuctions conducted at Apex Rhinology & Cosmetic Surgery are for cosmetic reasons only.

Where does the fat go during liposuction?

The fat, collected in a special container during the procedure, is transferred to a medical waste treatment company for disposal according to government-mandated protocol.

What is the difference between liposuction and a tummy tuck?

Liposuction is used to remove excess subcutaneous layer. Following liposuction, the skin usually retracts. If skin laxity is inadequate for retraction, excision of extra skin is needed. The process of excision is referred to as a “tummy tuck.” The best way to determine if you need liposuction with a tummy tuck is through a consultation, during which skin laxity can be evaluated.

What’s the best treatment for my double chin?
Submental fat accumulation or “double chin” is a common concern affecting people of all ages. Fat deposition in the neck area can make you look older and heavier than you actually are. Conversely, removing double chin can give an impression of significant weight loss and a more pleasant facial appearance.

Nonsurgical options such as cryolipolysis (freezing fat), nonablative laser (melting fat) or mesotherapy (breaking fat down) are available at Apex Rhinology & Cosmetic Surgery. These methods do require 3–5 sessions, depending on the amount of fat to be removed. There is also some posttreatment swelling, which can last up to 10 days.

KYBELLA®, another nonsurgical option available at our clinic, is an injectable treatment that destroys fat cells in the targeted area under the chin. This method requires up to approximately 6 sessions. Our highly trained experts can work with you to determine whether this option is right for your specific goals.

Liposuction of the submental fat offers a quick, controlled improvement with minimal downtime
and excellent treatment outcome. The procedure occurs under local anesthesia in an office setting
under sterile conditions. For most patients, the procedure takes less than an hour. Recovery is
comfortable with minimal downtime. Preoperative analysis with a VECTRA H2 camera is included in
your consultation.
